Based on information from Jean and Roy Burtoft's letter,
Madalyn Burtoft Allen's web searching, John Burtoft's email and
Alan Burtoft's visits, there is near Wigtoft (Wigtoft is village
15 miles from Kings Lynn in Lincolnshire) a small village called
Burtoft. In the Burtoft village is a pub with a street called
Burtofts Lane. Also on Burtofts Lane is a farm called Burtoft's
farm. It's a farmstead and 3 little cottages.
In Hoyland (which is Anglo Saxon for Highland), near Sheffield,
South Yorkshire, there are several families in the local telephone
directory. One owned the Bridge pub at Chapeltown another has a small
general store. At Hoyland Low Church, Nr Barnsley, Yorkshire. There
are several grave headstones that possess the Burtoft name.
(info complied from several different letters/emails)
Settlements in Britain range from Hamlets to Cities. At the
small end of the scale, Burtoft is a hamlet. I am unable to find
Burtoft directly on a map, Alan says Burtoft is located just under
the "S" of Sutterton on my map below. Wigtoft (the nearest town to
Burtoft) is near the intersection of A16 and A17 two major road ways
in the area. Wigtoft is located southwest of Boston. While Boston is
a city in Lincolnshire a county on the eastern side of England 100
miles north of London.

My father and I visited the hamlet of Burtoft in May of 2000.
Wigtoft is a good size village with one main street and many houses.
We stopped by the Pub in Wigtoft, bought a round of beer for everyone
and had a good time talking to the people there. There is a lane that
leads to Burtoft from Wigtoft and is called "Burtoft Lane". Burtoft
lane is split by a main road dividing the lane into north and south
sections. Continuing passed the main road on Burtoft Lane North we came
upon the hamlet of Burtoft nestled amoung a group of tress. Burtoft
itself consists of several houses in three different groups. Besides
the group of houses in the group of trees, the two other groups are
separated by about a half mile from each other further north on the
lane. The current residents told us that the Burtoft hamlet had many
more houses but where torn down as people left. Burtoft lane continues
beyond the three groups of houses until it intersects with another main
road.
I bought a british road map and the hamlet of Burtoft is shown,
I'll post a picture of the map soon...
We also discovered that there are no Burtoft's currently living
in the hamlet of Burtoft, see the following link for the rest of the
story.
